Cheslie Kryst penned essay on getting older last year: ‘Society has never been kind to those growing old’

This article contains information that many people will find upsetting.

A 2021 essay penned by the late Cheslie Kryst has resurfaced following the heartbreaking news of her tragic death.

As reported by the New York Post, the 2019 Miss USA pageant winner reportedly jumped to her death from her Midtown 60-story Orion building at around 7:15AM on Sunday morning. She was 30 years old.

Her passing was later confirmed in a statement by her family, who said of Kryst: “Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength. She cared, she loved, she laughed, and she shined.”

Following her tragic passing, an online essay penned by Kryst has resurfaced, in which she discusses the pressures of growing older.

Kryst – who was also a correspondent for Extra and a complex litigation attorney – wrote the essay for Allure prior to her 30th birthday.

The essay was published in March 2021, and in it, Kryst discusses her concerns about turning 30, writing: ” Society has never been kind to those growing old, especially women.”

She added: “When I was crowned Miss USA 2019 at 28 years old, I was the oldest woman in history to win the title, a designation even the sparkling $200,000 pearl and diamond Mikimoto crown could barely brighten for some diehard pageant fans who immediately began to petition for the age limit to be lowered.”

In the essay, Kryst adds: “Turning 30 feels like a cold reminder that I’m running out of time to matter in society’s eyes — and it’s infuriating.”

Elsewhere, she asks how she is supposed to “shake society’s unwavering norms” while at the same time facing the “unstoppable” and “relentless” ticking of time.

Throughout the article, Kryst discusses her struggles to be accepted in the pageant world – both for her looks and her opinions – and how she celebrated her 29th birthday the way she wanted, and not the way she felt like she was expected to.
