In statements after a meeting with AKEL Secretary General Andros Kypriamou, during which they discussed the most recent developments in the Cyprus reunification process, Troccaz reiterated his country`s support of a solution which will be compatible with the acquis communautaire.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN led talks have been ongoing since May 2015 aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof.
“As you know France supports a solution of the Cyprus problem,` Troccaz said, adding that “we certainly do not wish for any time frames nor for pressure to be exerted.”
“We want a proper solution, which will be compatible with the acquis communautaire,” he noted, adding that “this is very important.”
Certainly, continued the French Ambassador, “the United Nations Security Council will have its role to play when the time comes and this is key.” It is not, he added, “an option, it is something which is imperative.”
France, he noted, “is an ally of the Republic of Cyprus and in this context we define the way forward and our position as regards the Cyprus problem.”
On his part Andros Kyprianou thanked Troccaz and the French government for France`s “consistent position based on principles”, adding that the country has been an important ally and a supporter of the efforts undertaken to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.
At the same time he pointed out that it is a common position that the Cyprus problem must be resolved on the basis of principles as they have been agreed throughout the years, adding that this must be understood by all sides. He also said that it constitutes a common approach that the UN Security Council and the European Union will have an important role to play at the final stage.
